Consuela retires with grace

At age 17, Ragdoll cat Consuela found herself in need of a safe haven.

She now has a home with people dedicated to meeting her every need. In return, she’s providing her new people with endless joy.

Consuela came into our care from a local vet to whom she had been surrendered. She’d originally been in a living situation where she was very much loved, but which had become increasingly unsafe.

When Samantha saw the image of a rather dishevelled and sad-looking Consuela on our website, she immediately talked to fiancé Richard about the possibility of offering this lovely older lady a final warm and comfy home.

They lived in Palmerston North but that didn’t stop them from coming down to meet her with the offer of outright adoption.

During that first visit, a purring Consuela immediately took up residence on first one, then the other lap and didn’t move for more than quarter of an hour while she was patted and fussed over.

Patiently waiting until Consuela had started on medication to manage her recently diagnosed hyperthyroidism, and had sufficiently improved in body condition to safely have dental surgery, Samantha and Richard returned to CPW to take the gentle senior girl home at the end of April.

Anticipating that it would take a while for her to adapt to yet another home, they were surprised that Consuela settled in immediately. Samantha describes her as a ‘cuddlebug’ who is not fazed by anything.

She has her daily supervised walk outside, her own water fountain, heat pump, stimulation brush and a permanent place sitting between Richard and Samantha on the sofa every night, enjoying cuddles.

Clearly happy, Consuela has put on weight since being in her new home.

Richard’s 7-year-old daughter Sophie describes her as now being “soft like a cloud”.

This is not the first CPW cat for whom Samantha has opened her home. In July 2017 she took ginger and white girl Charlie home.

Charlie had taken up residence on top of the cages, avoiding the majority of volunteers and any visitors for three years until Samantha managed to get inside her defences.

Greatly adored and much missed, Charlie sadly passed away three years ago unexpectedly at age 15 from a suspected fast-moving cancer.

Always a cat owner from her first kitten when aged just 5 years old, called Popcorn, Samantha has long been described as ‘cat crazy’, finding their differing personalities endlessly fascinating.

We are certain that Consuela could not have found a more caring or happier home where she will be getting everything a lady of her status deserves!
